Extrel Quadrupole Mass Spectrometers, Residual Gas Analyzers and Spectrometry Electronics
Extrel began in 1964 as Extranuclear Laboratories, formed by University of Pittsburgh professors Ted Brackmann and Wade Fite to manufacture a stable RF power supply that grew out of Fite's physics research. It became Extrel Corporation in 1985. Extrel CMS, LLC acquired the business from a division of ABB in 2004, and Union Park acquired Extrel CMS in 2020. The company is based in Pittsburgh and builds research and process mass spectrometers, residual gas analyzers and quadrupole components.
Extrel's instruments serve research and national labs and the chemical, refining and pharmaceutical industries, where they are used for process optimization, regulatory compliance and research. A quadrupole mass filter applies an RF voltage with a DC offset between its pairs of rods, and only ions of a certain mass-to-charge ratio reach the detector, so the instrument depends on its RF and DC electronics as much as on the rods.
