Appleton Conduit Bodies, Fittings, Enclosures and Pin and Sleeve Receptacles
Albert Ivar Appleton founded the Appleton Electric Company in Chicago in 1903, and its early products were Unilet conduit bodies and boxes. Emerson Electric bought the company in 1982. From 1997 Appleton was part of EGS Electrical Group, alongside O-Z/Gedney, and in 2014 Emerson took full ownership of EGS and renamed it Appleton Group.
Appleton makes electrical products for industrial and hazardous locations: Unilet conduit bodies and electrical fittings, boxes and enclosures, plugs and receptacles, and lighting fixtures. Its Powertite Series of metallic pin and sleeve devices is the basis for many of its plug and receptacle systems. Conduit bodies stay in service as long as the conduit run they belong to, so a replacement body or cover is matched to the type and hub size already in the run.
Conduit body types are named for where the outlet sits. On an LB, LL or LR the inlet lines up with the access cover and the outlet is on the back, the left or the right; a T has outlets to both sides of the cover; and a C has openings above and below the cover for a straight pull. An Appleton catalog number such as LB17 names a Type LB Unilet body with a 1/2 in. hub in Form 7.
