Canberra Nuclear Instrumentation Module (NIM) Electronics, Germanium Detectors and Spectroscopy Systems
Canberra Industries was founded in 1965 and grew into a nuclear instrumentation and measurement business. Packard BioScience sold its Canberra division to COGEMA on February 27, 2001, and AREVA completed the sale of Canberra to Mirion Technologies on July 1, 2016.
Canberra built instruments for nuclear measurement and radiation monitoring. Its catalogs cover germanium detectors and other radiation detectors, multichannel analyzers, acquisition interface modules, gamma, alpha and X-ray spectrometers, health physics monitors, and NIM electronics such as high voltage power supplies.
The NIM standard, first defined by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1968-1969, sets the mechanical and electrical specifications for these modules. A module slides into a NIM bin, the bin supplies its operating power, and modules built to the standard by different makers can share one bin. Labs often keep NIM spectroscopy setups running for years, so modules for older systems stay in demand.
