ORTEC Nuclear Instrumentation Module (NIM) Electronics, Detectors and Spectroscopy Systems
ORTEC was founded in 1960 by a group of scientists from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The company is known for nuclear instrumentation, high purity germanium detectors and spectroscopy systems. AMETEK has owned the ORTEC line since its acquisition of the IRAS instrument businesses in December 2001.
ORTEC's NIM electronics take in spectroscopy amplifiers and preamplifiers, timing discriminators, counters and timers, bias supplies, and NIM bins with their power supplies. EG&G bought ORTEC in 1967, and the company traded as EG&G ORTEC into the 1990s. Germanium detectors must be cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature, so the supplies, fill controllers and modules around a detector stay in service as long as the detector does.
NIM (Nuclear Instrumentation Module) is the standard first defined by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1968 and 1969. Modules slide into a NIM bin, which supplies plus and minus 12 and 24 volts DC through its backplane.
