Product Overview
Detectors need a steady, adjustable bias, and the Ortec 459 supplies it from a single-width Nuclear Instrumentation Module (NIM) slot. Output is set on a turns-counting dial and read on the front meter, NEG and POS lamps show which polarity the unit is set for, and a rear BNC lets a detector's shutdown line cut the high voltage.

Which rear output should I use?
The 0-5KV jack, marked Zo = 2M ohm, carries the full range for germanium detectors and photomultiplier tubes. The 0-500V jack, marked Zo = 100K ohm, serves detectors that need lower bias, such as silicon surface barrier detectors. This unit was run to 5000V with the meter and dial in agreement. A germanium detector that warms up with bias still applied can be damaged, which is why its preamp sends a warning. The rear REMOTE SHUTDOWN jack on this supply is where that warning goes, so wire it in before you turn the dial.
