Product Overview
Ortec Model 459 Detector Bias Supply, 0 to 5000V, Set for Positive Output
Condition
Used but well-maintained, in good overall shape. Tested: the output matched the dial settings and was linear from 0 to 5000V. The panel meter reads slightly off from the dial. It is set internally for positive operation. Markings legible: ORTEC 459 BIAS SUPPLY 0-5KV on the front panel; rear label ORTEC, Ser. 2558, Rev 21, Made in U.S.A.

Product Overview
Radiation detectors need a steady, adjustable bias voltage, and the Ortec 459 delivers it from a Nuclear Instrumentation Module (NIM) bin slot. The voltage is set on a turns-counting dial, NEG and POS lamps show the selected polarity, and a rear remote shutdown input lets a detector's protection line cut the high voltage. This unit is set for positive output.
Key Features
- Front panel marked 459 BIAS SUPPLY 0-5KV
- Rear outputs marked 0-5KV (Zo = 2M ohm) and 0-500V
- Rear REMOTE SHUTDOWN BNC input
- Front panel meter scaled 0 to 5, NEG and POS polarity lamps
- Turns-counting VOLTAGE dial
- HIGH VOLTAGE on / off toggle with indicator lamp
- Standard NIM rear power connector, draws power from the bin
Applications
- Biasing a photomultiplier tube or proportional counter that runs on positive high voltage
- Running a lower-voltage detector from the separate 0-500V rear output
- Replacing a failed 459 in a working NIM spectroscopy station
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it set for positive or negative output?
Positive. The polarity is set internally, and the POS lamp on the front panel shows it.
Can I trust the panel meter?
The meter reads slightly off from the dial. On test, the output itself matched the dial settings and was linear up to 5000V, so the dial is the reference to set by.
Is a manual included?
Not included.
Does it need its own power cord?
No. It plugs into a standard NIM bin and draws its power through the rear NIM connector. Flat-rate shipping in the lower 48, and orders over the free-shipping line ship free.
The meter on this one has opinions, but the output does exactly what the dial says, all the way to 5000V. Set it by the dial and let the detector get back to counting.
