Princeton Gamma-Tech Nuclear Instrumentation Module (NIM) Electronics and Radiation Detector Equipment

Princeton Gamma-Tech (PGT) was founded in 1965 by Joe Baicker and his graduate school friend Al Sayers. The company made semiconductor gamma-ray and X-ray detectors, and some of its instruments flew on the Apollo program. From its facility in Princeton, New Jersey, PGT supplied X-ray and gamma-ray detectors, spectroscopy systems and radiation area monitors.

Germanium detectors, a common type of semiconductor gamma-ray detector, must be cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature. Laboratories keep detector systems in service for many years, so the cooling controllers and supporting electronics around them stay in demand.

NIM (Nuclear Instrumentation Module) is the standard first defined by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1968 and 1969. A NIM bin supplies plus and minus 12 and 24 volts DC to its modules through the backplane.
