Tennelec Nuclear Instrumentation Module (NIM) Amplifiers, High Voltage Supplies and Counting Instruments
Edward Fairstein founded Tennelec in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in the early 1960s. Its TC-200 amplifier was a successful early design that established the company in nuclear instrumentation. In the 1970s Tennelec also built radio scanners, including the Memoryscan of 1974. Tennelec later became part of Canberra Industries, which Mirion Technologies acquired in 2016.
Tennelec built instruments for nuclear studies: amplifiers, detectors and particle counters, along with NIM modules that include high voltage supplies.
A NIM module slides into a NIM bin, and the bin supplies its operating power. A spectroscopy amplifier shapes the pulses from a detector preamplifier for an ADC or multichannel analyzer, and a bias supply holds the detector at its operating voltage. Labs often keep NIM spectroscopy setups running for years, so modules for older systems stay in demand.
