Lavallee & Ide, Inc. filed trademarks for its reamers: SCR for chucking reamers in 1959, SPHERAFORM for machinists' reamers in 1964 and JAL-CARB for power operated carbide reamers in 1986.
A reamer finishes a drilled hole to its final size, so each one is matched to the hole diameter it must produce. Machine shops keep reamers in service for years, so a replacement often has to match a size already in use.
