Newbridge Networks MainStreet ATM, Channelbank and Data Networking Equipment
Newbridge Networks was founded in 1986 by Welsh-Canadian entrepreneur Sir Terry Matthews and was headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. The company built networking equipment for data and voice networks, including channelbank systems, the 46020 network management system and ACC routers, and from 1992 it focused heavily on ATM products such as the MainStreet 36150. After buying Ungermann-Bass, it added routing and switching products. Alcatel acquired Newbridge in February 2000.
Telephone companies used Newbridge channelbank products to offer a wider range of services over their existing wiring. The MainStreet Xpress 36170 was later renamed the Alcatel 7470. Networks built on MainStreet equipment often stayed in service long after the Alcatel purchase, so spare cards and power hardware for those systems stay in demand.
