Newport Optics, Optical Tables and Motion Control
Newport Corporation began in 1969 as Newport Research Corporation, started in a garage by Caltech graduates John Matthew and Dennis Terry, who were looking for industrial uses for lasers. Its first commercial product was a steel-clad honeycomb-core table for laser experiments. The company grew into a photonics supplier based in Irvine, California, bought Spectra-Physics in 2004 and was acquired by MKS Instruments in April 2016.
Newport Corporation's photonics range takes in optical tables and vibration control platforms, motion control and positioning equipment, photonics instruments, lasers and light sources, and optics such as lenses, mirrors, prisms and beamsplitters. Optical mounts and positioners outlast the experiments they were bought for, so labs move them from one setup to the next. Panel meters and controllers under the Newport name, such as the iSeries, come from a separate company, Newport Electronics of Santa Ana, California, which began making electronic instrumentation in 1965 and merged into Omega Engineering in 2014.
