SICK Industrial Sensors, Safety Laser Scanners and 2D LiDAR Sensors
Erwin Sick founded the company that became SICK AG on September 26, 1946, working from an old barracks in Vaterstetten near Munich. The company moved to Waldkirch in 1956 and is headquartered there, in Waldkirch im Breisgau near Freiburg. In 1989 SICK achieved its first distance determination with laser light using the pulse time-of-flight principle, and in 2006 it introduced the S300 safety laser scanner.
SICK makes sensors for industrial automation: photoelectric sensors, light grids, inductive, capacitive and magnetic sensors, opto-electronic protective devices, vision sensors, bar code scanners and RFID readers, laser scanners and LiDAR sensors, and analyzers for gas and liquid analysis. A 2D LiDAR scanner sweeps a laser across a plane and measures distance by time of flight, and is used for collision avoidance on mobile robots and driverless vehicles and for area monitoring.
