MSA Breathing Apparatus, Respirators, Gas Detectors and Fire Service Equipment

Mining engineer John T. Ryan Sr. and George H. Deike founded Mine Safety Appliances, setting up in downtown Pittsburgh on June 14, 1914. The company, now MSA Safety, is headquartered in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. Its breathing apparatus line includes the Custom 4500 Air Mask of 1983, and in 1990 the Ultralite MMR and Custom 4500 MMR became its first SCBAs with mask-mounted regulators.

MSA makes safety equipment for fire service, industrial and military users: self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for firefighters, filter-type respirators and gas masks, gas monitoring and detection instruments, firefighter helmets, thermal imaging cameras, and head and fall protection, including the Skullgard hard hat. Fire departments keep SCBA and its accessories in service for years, and parts are matched by MSA part number against the department's equipment.
